The Winnipeg Football Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and will do so by looking back at their rich history both on and off the field. On Wednesday, June 30, the football club will hold its sold out Legacy Dinner at Canad Inns Polo Park presented by Getting It Done. The evening will be dedicated to celebrating 80 years of Blue Bomber football by recognizing the club’s heroes from generations past.
The dinner will feature 13 Blue Bomber honorees including three Grey Cup winning coaches in Bud Grant, Cal Murphy and Mike Riley, and ten of the greatest players in Bomber history as chosen by the selection committee. Those ten are, from the 1950's, defensive tackle Buddy Tinsley who was a 7-time all-star; from the 50's and 60's, Leo "the Lincoln Locomotive" Lewis and Ken Ploen; from the 70's, Don Jonas; from the 70's and 80's, Dieter Brock and Joe Poplawski; from the 80's and 90's, Chris Walby, James Murphy and Bob Cameron, and from the 2000's Milt Stegall.
Hosted by the legendary voice of the Blue Bombers, CJOB’s Bob Irving, the evening will feature hot stove features with all of the honorees, door prizes and a silent auction. The 2010 Blue Bombers players and coaches will also be in attendance, as well as many other Bomber alumni.
"We are very much looking forward to this evening where we will celebrate decades of fond memories and nostalgia that will look back on 80 years of Blue Bomber football. Those in attendance will be treated to a very special evening as they reflect and remember their own Bomber heroes as well as hear from these honorees as they share their own stories and experiences as players and coaches. We are proud as an organization to celebrate 80 years of rich history in this great city," said Blue Bombers President Jim Bell.
An autograph session with the 13 Blue Bomber honorees will take place on Thursday, July 1 at Canad Inns Stadium. The honorees will also be present at the 2010 season opener on Friday, July 2 vs. Hamilton for a special halftime tribute.
All of these events will be part of the Manitoba Homecoming 2010 Summer Kickoff Weekend.
